How many times have you looked at a food label and couldn’t pronounce half of the ingredients or understand what the label claims mean? Do you have dietary restrictions that make it ridiculously hard to find tasty food? In this article, we’ll show you how you can have Maisie Jane’s tasty Kosher almond butter, and even some recipes you can enjoy!
Kosher – What does it mean?
Technically, it means that the food product is made in ways that comply with biblical Jewish law. So, for example, it will not contain certain foods like pork that observant orthodox Jews are not allowed to eat. Also, Jewish law insists that animals be slaughtered in the most moral—meaning instantaneous and pain-free—ways possible. Also dairy and meat products are never combined (the thinking being that the spirit of the cow should be honored by never being bathed in its mother’s milk).
Obviously, this is important to Jews who observe the Kosher laws, but you might find it interesting to know that only 20% of the people who buy Kosher products in the United States are Jewish. Muslims, Seventh Day Adventists, vegetarians, vegans, and people who are lactose intolerant also appreciate the rules companies need to comply with for this label. Some of this is because of the dietary rules of their own religions; some is because of an appreciation of the moral significance of the customs and the idea that food prepared in this fashion may be more clean or safe.
Of course, Maisie Jane’s doesn’t sell meat so that part of the certification doesn’t apply. And, under most circumstances, all unprocessed food products that grow in the soil or on plants, bushes, or trees are automatically kosher. Insects, however, are not, so plants prone to insect infestations must be checked and the insects removed. All raw unprocessed nuts with no additives or preservatives are Kosher. However, nuts roasted in oil might not be acceptable, depending on the type of oil and other factors.
Maisie Jane’s is Kosher certified. This means the processes used for our almond butter are following biblical laws of cleanliness, purity, and quality that makes these products available to the Jewish community. It’s important to us because we don’t want anyone to worry about what’s in their food.
What’s the process for being Kosher certified?
The company applying to be Kosher certified will need to answer questions about their products. The following questions are for basic food manufacturing situations:
- What is the exact location where your products are manufactured?
- Is this production facility dedicated to your products alone or do you employ a Contract Manufacturer?
- What are all the ingredients in your products?
